本文是《英语豆知识系列》第29篇。
在应试教育下成长起来的我音乐知识非常缺乏，因为从小学四年级开始音乐课就取消了，毕竟中考高考都不考音乐的不是么。结果就是我不认识五线谱（staff（美式）或者stave（英式））。
只知道简谱（numbered musical notation，也叫数字谱）。
相信中国大陆有很多人和我类似。据说简谱由欧洲传入日本，然后由留学生于1904年引入中国。那么问题就来了，明明写作1234567，为什么要读做哆来咪发唆拉西，英文为do、re、mi、fa、sol、la、ti呢？
*小贴士：
不论是英式还是美式，它们的复数形式都是staves，其实英式拼写stave，是从复数形式staves反推过来的。
Stave这个词经常被用在一个众人皆知的俗语中：The shortest stave determines the amount of water the barrel can hold，也就是木桶理论。
著名的好莱坞电影《音乐之声 》（the Sound of Music）里有一首著名的哆啦咪歌（do re mi）来教孩子记住如何练这7个音：

原来，这种教授方法叫做 ，读作: /sɒlˈfɛʒ/，也叫sol-fa唱名。它是11世纪由音乐理论家Guido of Arezzo发明的。他用《给约翰洗礼者的颂歌》（Hymn to Saint John the Baptist）每句歌词的第一个音节（syllable）给每一个音阶（scale）标名如下：
Ut queant laxīs resonāre fībrīs
Mīra gestōrum famulī tuōrum,
Solve pollūtī labiī reātum,
Sancte Iōhannēs.
大约17世纪的时侯，ut被改成了do，因为以元音结尾的单词读起来更朗朗上口。此后在19世纪的时候，si又被改成了ti，这样do、re、mi、fa、sol、la、ti读下来第一个字母就没有重复的了，这个系列的读音也就逐渐固定下来了。
